And yet the books will be there on the shelves, well born,
Derived from people, but also from radiance, heights.

WHY AND HOW OUR WORK IN RUSSIA BEGAN

Access to Ideas is an organization that works to not only open libraries in Russian villages, but understanding in our world. It was founded by Nikolai Arjannikov of Moscow Russia and Jeannie Ferber of Alton NH on the very first day of January 2000, and on a very old idea: that books are vital to individuals, societies, and nations. No matter how old, the best of them retain their value and speak to each new generation, honoring, strengthening, and appealing to our capacity to think.

Arjannikov and Ferber met during Ferber's first journey to Russia in 1999, when Arjannikov, as a favor to a friend, acted as chauffeur and escorted her around Moscow. The result was lengthy conversations about freedom and democracy, and the need now for the peoples of our world to break through stereotypes and come to understand one another. Arjannikov was the organizer of the democracy movement in Leningrad in 1989 and served one term in the Duma. Ferber is a book publisher and writer.

To date, Access to Ideas has done seven library projects. Over 4000 books have been purchased for village libraries, in addition to gift books bought for each child when funds allow. The books are of the highest quality and are chosen by the school directors, teachers, and students. (Please visit our Resource Library to see the types of books we buy -- everything from Shakespeare and the classics, to language learning books, "how-to" books, and art and history books.) In addition, each project has given us many ways to further understanding between people, through pen pal programs and phone bridges, as well as through a series of films we have produced and books we have published. (Please visit our bookshop to learn more.)

However simple, it is direct contact with others that opens our hearts and suddenly creates a genuine interest in their lives and well-being. We welcome your ideas and interest. Please feel free to contact us at:  books@worldpath.net
