It began as one man's view of America taken across four decades. It
ended as a gift. The journey was Stephen Gottschalk's in which he looked at
America, unapologetically, through the lens of the heart. Only last year did
the journey become an album comprised of nearly 200 photographs that would allow
our Russian friends, most of whom will never be able to come to America, a
chance to journey across it.
American Album went everywhere with us. Not surprisingly, having been sent
from the heart, it was eagerly passed from hand to hand. The 5" x 7"
photographs were spread out on wooden floors, across kitchen tables, and finally
were set up as a public exhibition in an art school in Revda at the invitation
of the city's mayor. Everywhere we went, the album's unvarnished view of
America touched hearts, opened eyes, and drew our world a little closer
together. Even though we can only share a fraction of the photographs here, we
nonetheless wanted to share this story with you so significant was the album's
impact in Russia.
