The
children had been waiting more than an hour in the school lobby. Many were
dressed in costumes. When we stepped through the door, in perfect unison they
began to sing. We clapped and choked back tears. They smiled and gathered
around us. We laughed and reached out our hands. They giggled and gave us
theirs. We stared at each other with hearts bursting and then, with shrieks of
excitement, they flew off to their classes to wait for their books.
The library now holds 621 beautiful new hard bound books: encyclopedias,
English language books and dictionaries, the classics; art, history, and "how
to" books, as well as fairy tales. Besides these, large wall maps were bought
for each of the eleven class rooms. Finally, each of the 73 school children was
given a book of his or her own. The library will be used not only by the
children and teachers, but by their families and the smaller surrounding
villages. At the end of the day, with things brought from their gardens, we all
sat down together at a long table to share an early Thanksgiving feast.
